What are the Side Effects of an Influenza Vaccine

Influenza vaccine is a lively vaccine given recently. There are two types of influenza vaccine: the inactive flu vaccine and the active flu vaccine. Both inactivated and active influenza vaccines can not cause influenza infection.

Although not including drugs, this vaccine also has side effects such as drugs. However, these side effects are usually only mild side effects that will disappear by itself. Serious side effects may actually occur although very rarely.

Inactive Influenza Vaccine

Some of the mild side effects that can occur after the inactivated influenza vaccine are:

• Pain, swelling, or redness of the injection site
• Eye or red eye or itchy eyes
• Cough
• Fever
• Muscle ache
• Headache
• The body feels itchy
• Feeling very tired

These mild symptoms usually occur as soon as the vaccine is given and can last for 1-2 days.

Young children who receive inactivated influenza vaccine along with pneumococcal vaccine may increase the risk of febrile seizures.

Some of the serious side effects that can arise after receiving the inactivated influenza vaccine are:

• Severe allergic reactions, which can occur immediately after administration of the vaccine
• Risk of Guillain-Barre syndrome

The risk of these serious adverse events is less than the risk of complications from influenza infection. Consult your pediatrician before your child receives any vaccine.

Active Influenza Vaccine

Active influenza vaccine contains influenza virus that has been weakened so that it can not cause infection.

Some minor side effects that can occur in children aged 2-17 years after receiving the active influenza vaccine are:

• Runny nose, nasal congestion, or cough
• Fever
• Headache
• Muscle ache
• Breath sounds (wheezing)
• Abdominal pain or sometimes nausea or vomiting

Some of the mild side effects that can occur in people aged 18-49 years after receiving the active influenza vaccine are:

• Runny nose or stuffy nose
• Throat pain
• Cough
• Shivering
• Feeling tired or weak
• Headache

Severe allergic reactions can occur after receiving an active influenza vaccine, although very rarely.
